The Comeback KidsJanno Gibbs and Vina Morales in concert |
|||||||||||||||
| JANNO GIBBS Its been quite a while since concert goers have seen Janno Gibbs on stage. Dubbed The Voice by Filipino entertainment writers, the 30-year-old singer-comedian held his last concert way back in 1990. Which is why his team-up with Vina Morales on May 13 at the Grand Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles is now the talk of the town. Janno admits to being lazy: May panahon na tamad ako, na ayaw kong magtrabaho, pero siguro pine-pace ko lang ang sarili ko, para di ako maging sawang-sawa sa trabaho. And despite his stature and popularity as a singer, Janno very rarely comes up with an album, or a concert for that matter. He attributes this to his belief that it is not really very wise to foist himself continuously on the public as a singer. |

| So when you come out with an album, Janno says, people will be reacting with Ang tagal-tagal mo bago ka nagkaroon ng new album, instead of Meron na naman, ikaw na naman. Ayaw kong pagsawaan ako ng tao. Sometimes its intentional on my part not to do so much, so when I come up with something new, like this concert, people will look forward to it. But the fact that hes turned 30 has raised a sense of urgency within himself. Hinahabol ko ngayon ang lahat, TV shows, movies, albums. Gusto kong maraming ma-accomplish this year, Janno reveals. In September of 199, Janno launched his Blow-Out concert series at the Music Museum in Manila. The event was a double celebration for the singer who had just turned 30 and was marking his 15th year in show business. Janno watchers still agree that The Voice hasnt lost his touch, and that he still manages to come up with a few surprises to mesmerize his fans. Apparently, his easygoing, laidback attitude hasnt hurt his singing career, as proven by the sellout concert series produced by his wife, Bing Loyzaga. He is still a favorite among concert goers in the Philippines and the United States. Equipped with a strong, solid voice and a delightful sense of humor, Janno easily captivates his audience, gliding effortlessly from mellow love songs to animated dance numbers. Aside from live, onstage performances, Janno is one of the more highly visible celebrities on television, appearing in variety shows like SOP and the comedy Beh Bote Nga. How does he balance his career with family life? Well, for one things, he and his wife Bing sort of manage each others career. Bing takes care of the business end, while Janno handles the artistic aspects. They are also very much involved in their daughters budding showbiz career. Janno and Bings pride and joy, Alyssa, has already appeared in a couple of commercials with mom and dad, and is starting to get more offers. She also makes her debut as a singer in her dads latest album, Sa Yo. Ive always tried not to be that busy, precisely so I could spend more time with my family. In terms of priorities, my career comes second only. My first priority is my family, says Janno. But because he is also making up for lost time in his career, he is definitely putting his heart and soul into this upcoming concert in Los Angeles. Together with Vina Morales, it promises to be the perfect showcase for The Voice that many Filipinos cant get enough of. Finally, people will get to hear him sing. Again. As usual, theyll still ask him: so why arent you singing as much...? |

| VINA MORALES Vina Morales has had her share of heartaches from a failed romance, but unlike most women, she didnt sulk and bury her head in the sand. Instead, Vina moved on with her life, using the experience to her advantage. Counting them as love points, the Cebuana singer sees her personal failure as a blessing in disguise, an opportunity that helped her give justice to the highly-sentimental songs included in her latest album entitled No Limits. The 10-track outing, which contains two revivals -- Ill Always Love You and Someones Always Saying Goodbye -- features the sultry singer in a totally different light. No Limits sets free her singing prowess, enabling her to experiment with a variety of styles for a change. Theres alternative pop, Latin beat, ballroom dancing tunes, techno-pop and of course, ballads. Also, No Limits when it |

| comes to my interpretation of the songs, because before, singing songs about lost loves and broken hearts didnt suit me well. I couldnt relate. But now, it turns out that my interpretations were credible, especially songs about lost love, says Vina. The 24-year-old singer, whose real name is Sharon Garcia Magdayao, is one of the Philippines pride in the entertainment scene. She began her showbusiness career at the age of 10, practicing in front of the mirror day in and day out, even when she was in the shower. Now, she calls the industry home. As an actress, her first break was in the movie Nakagapos ng Puso with Lorna Tolentino, Sharon Cuneta and Tonton Gutierrez. Only 10 at the time, she played the role of Tontons niece to the hilt. Her first lead role was in Anghel na Walang Langit, where she played a prostitute and a tamed woman both at the same time. But the most challenging role she has landed so far was in the movie The Sarah Balabagan Story, where she emoted the pain, the sexual abuse and all the harrowing experiences of OCW (Overseas Contract Worker) Sarah Balabagan in the hands of her Arab employer. Her portrayal of Balabagan as a rape victim has led to more and better roles in movies. To date, movie critics continue to hail the young actress performances in comedy, action and dramatic movies. Some of her noteworthy awards include Best Actress during the Urian Awards. But Vina has never neglected her other talent as a singer. She began her career as a singer with renditions of Bato sa Buhangin and, capitalizing on a repertoire made up mostly of Carpenters songs, she finally broke through the mold with three albums for Viva Records and another three for OctoArts EMI. In 1966, she was named Best Female Recording Artist during the Awit Awards and received the Gold Record Award for her Easy to Love album. With the release of her latest album No Limits, Vina has been doing the rounds of TV and radio shows, as well as malls all over the Philippines. Yet, busybody that she is, she is finding time for her fans in the U.S., as she teams up with Janno Gibbs during their upcoming concert entitled Blow Out with No Limits. As always, Vina is gearing up the event, and bent only on giving her best performance. |
